30 July to 25 October 2026
Nairobi, Kenya
At a time of resource scarcity, the exhibition “The Great Repair” offers an alternative to the dominant logic of demolition and new construction. It presents repair as an architectural practice that extends beyond the built environment to social, philosophical, and ecological questions.
Following stations in Berlin, Paris and Malmö, "The Great Repair" opens on 30 July 2026 in Nairobi, where it can be seen, expanded with local perspectives, until 25 October 2026. In cooperation with the Akademie der Künste, Berlin, the Nairobi edition presents the collaboration between the architecture magazine ARCH+ and the exhibition space and curatorial collective munyu.
"UMUNYU: Acts of Repair" brings the exhibition into the urban fabric of the city. In formats such as the panel "Under Construction: The Museum as Process", the role of museums and cultural spaces in a city like Nairobi is explored at different locations across the city. "Umunyu" comes from Kenyan everyday practice and describes the principle of making something useful from what is already there.
We are funding “UMUNYU: Acts of Repair” as a pilot project within our programme "Engage in dialogues". The programme strengthens professional exchange between museum practitioners to advance cross-border cooperation.
