Discussion: “Development of the Agency and Its Mission in the Internationalisation of German Museum Work”
From 8–14 December 2024, guests from Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Palau, Papua New Guinea, Rwanda, Samoa, and South Africa came to Germany to gain comprehensive insights into the country’s museum work and to engage in dialogues on various aspects of the culture of remembrance. Experts from within the museum sector and cultural politics were invited by their respective embassies and consulates general as part of the Federal Republic of Germany’s visitor’s programme. Titled “Museums and Historical Sites as Places of Remembrance, Debate, and New Beginnings – Curating as a Social Task”, the programme was thematically structured around subjects including colonial architecture, memorial sites, and the function of documents, photographs, and other museum artefacts in scholarly research. The role of museums as platforms for social discourse was also explored in depth. When the group visited Berlin, the museum agency introduced its goals and initial opportunities for international collaboration were discussed.
The discussion with the museum agency was part of a visitor’s programme hosted by the German Federal Foreign Office and organised by the Goethe-Institut.
