Peer exchange between Ukrainian and German museum professionals on inclusive museum practices

How can museums become more accessible, inclusive, and responsive to the diverse needs of their audiences? Initiated by OBMIN and as part of the Ukrainian-Polish-German cooperation “Cultural Guardians: A Cross-Border Cultural Heritage Programme”, Ukrainian museum professionals will travel to museums in Warsaw, Frankfurt (Oder), Brandenburg, and Berlin in autumn 2025 to engage with local colleagues on strategies for monument protection, inclusive museum practices, and audience engagement.

In Berlin, participants will join this workshop designed by the museum agency for an exchange with outreach professionals from German institutions focussed on best practices in the areas of accessibility, multilingual offerings, and inclusive storytelling. A central component will be peer consultation, a structured and supportive method for reflecting on real-life examples and challenges faced by museums and memorial institutions. This format also creates space to address complex topics such as contested histories, accessibility beyond legal requirements, and connecting meaningfully with diverse communities.

The workshop is supported through our programme International Dialogues. This initiative facilitates exchange among museum professionals, enabling them to jointly address the many contemporary challenges in cross-border cultural work.
