Breaking new ground: Institute for Museum Research and the Museum Agency partner on English Editions of “Museums: By the Numbers”

For the first time, the Institute for Museum Research (National Museums in Berlin – Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation) and the Agency for International Museum Cooperation (Museum Agency) are collaborating on the current editions of “Museums: By the Numbers” (2022 and 2023). With the publication of these English translations, key data on the museum landscape in Germany is now accessible to an international audience, thereby enhancing the global visibility of the German museum sector.

We are very pleased that this collaboration will also continue for the next edition.

The publication series “Museums: By the Numbers” is based on the Institute for Museum Research’s annual statistical survey. It presents key figures, trends, and analyses on museum work in Germany in a concise and visually engaging format. With the new English editions, this data is now available to international professionals in research, cultural policy, and museum practice.

The “Museums: By the Numbers” special issues feature, among other things:

  • Baseline data on museums in Germany (e.g., number of museums, visitor figures, and information on staff and collections)
  • Current developments and trends in museum practice
  • Findings from special surveys on structural and societal topics
  • Visually designed infographics to contextualise and interpret the data

“At the Institute for Museum Research, we conduct research with and about museums. For this reason, since 2019, we have presented the Statistical Survey of Museums in Germany in a compact format, featuring infographics by different designers each year. Our aim is not only to provide key figures and comparative data for the sector, but also to make exploring the museum landscape engaging and enjoyable. We are pleased to partner with the museum agency, which now brings international visibility to our data.”
— Kathrin Grotz, Head of the Research & Statistics Department, Institute for Museum Research

“The English edition of ‘Museums: By the Numbers’ introduces the diversity and breadth of the German museum sector to an international audience in an informative and highly accessible way. The Institute for Museum Research is an invaluable partner for this publication, and the collaboration marks an important step in highlighting internationally how dynamic and attractive Germany’s museum landscape truly is.”
— Silke Krummel, Director, Agency for International Museum Cooperation
